Lucy’s story

10-year-old Lucy was struggling emotionally, becoming disengaged with school and with friends and lacking in self-confidence.

That’s where TLG Early Intervention came in. Lucy was apprehensive at first to open up to someone about how she was feeling “I didn’t really know if I wanted to do one-on-one talking, but I ended up really loving it.”

Lucy’s coach, Donna, has recognised the impact TLG coaches can have as a trusted adult is a child’s life that isn’t a teacher or family member. By coming alongside Lucy, she’s been able to chat to her about the ins and outs of friendship and emotions that Lucy was struggling with.

In the past Lucy would often use art and drawing to depict and express her sad and angry emotions. Donna recognised Lucy’s creativity quickly in their first sessions and so they decided to continue this together, creating an animation with playdough figures with the moral of the story being “things aren’t always as bad as you think.”

The two laugh about the mishaps they had along the way when editing the video, with Donna sharing how Lucy had taught her so much from their time together.

“Through the animation I just felt better about my emotions” shares Lucy.

Lucy’s school principal Peter, very quickly saw a turnaround from Lucy and the way she was in school because of time spent with Donna.

“I’m really proud of Lucy, because she is now working in line with her peers, which is fantastic!”

I didn’t really know if I wanted to do one-on-one talking, but I ended up really loving it.
