8 free adventures for your family to try this May!

30th April 2018

Here at TLG we know that it's not always easy to think of things to do with your kids during the holidays. So, we've come up with 8 great ideas for things you could do as a family during the May bank holidays. And the best part is, they're all free!

London

When we think of spring, we think of baby animals and flowers. But what happens when you're in a metropolis of concrete and traffic?

If you’re based around London, we recommend visiting a city farm - a hubbub of activity giving children the chance to experience the sights (and smells!) of farm life, even within the city. Head to Kentish Town Farm on the 6th May to enjoy a May Day festival – perfect for a bank holiday weekend! Find out more here.

South West

Arrr me hearties! What’s better than a pirate festival on a May weekend? If you or your children dream of being pirates for a day, head to Plymouth or Brixham for the chance to dress up, hear some pirate music and even step on board a real pirate ship!

South East

Does your family daydream about being in a galaxy far, far away?

Brighton’s Hove Museum are running a special exhibition featuring vintage Star Wars toys and memorabilia which is sure to fascinate many a kid (and adult!). If your love of all things alien extends beyond Star Wars then stick around for the Aliens, Zombies and Monsters exhibition! Find out more here.

Midlands

If, like us, you’d love to be on the other side of the camera for a change, head to the BBC Birmingham Visitor Centre. You’ll love the chance to see some of the amazing costumes and props, try your hand at presenting the weather and visit an interactive exhibition showcasing the very best of what the BBC has to offer! Plan your visit here (you’ll need to scroll down to see the Visitor Centre section).

North

Yellow jersey anyone? The Tour de Yorkshire is back and if you’re based in the North, you’re perfectly placed to get out and watch the cycling! Taking place over the early May bank holiday weekend, it’s a great chance to head somewhere new, whether that’s in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside or the bustling cities of Leeds, Doncaster or Halifax. Check out the handy spectator guide here and find out more about the Tour here.

Wales

If you and your family love history, visit Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza for a chance to experience life as a Victorian. With food, a fun fair, parades, music and lots of entertainment, there’s something for every member of the family to enjoy and you might even learn something new! Plan your visit here.

Scotland

A visit to the Kelpies at Helix Park in Falkirk is always amazing, and it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some time outdoors during the (hopefully) sunny bank holidays! With connections to over 500km of cycle routes, 26km of walking paths and an amazing play park, there’s plenty to do and that’s before seeing the Kelpies themselves! Find out everything you need to know here.

Northern Ireland

Are your kids still in love with dreams of fairies and giants? Slieve Gullion Forest Park offers beautiful woodland, walking trails, stunning views and a hint of magic – brilliant for a day out!

Kids and adults alike will enjoy exploring The Giant’s Lair, a living storybook of fairytales, mystery and fantasy. Once you’re done there, don’t forget to spend some time discovering the Adventure Playpark – just don’t get lost in the maze! Plan your adventure here.
